| BURNS STANZA Burns Stanza is a verse form popularized and named after Scotland's national poet Robert Burns (1759-1796), although it was not his invention. Prior to having his name attached to this form it was called the standard Habbie, after the poet Habbie Simpson (1550-1620). It is also sometimes referred to as the Scottish stanza or six line stave. It was frequently used by 18th Century Lowland Scottish poets like Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns and others. The form lends itself to somewhat of a lyrical content because of the two shorter lines which can give a poem a musical flip at its end. Hence stanzas can be somewhat comical or satirical. Stanzas are six lines in length and rhymes aaabab, with tetrameter a lines and dimeter b lines. The second b line may or may not be repeated. Sometimes a 999696 pattern is used as a variation. |
